A magnum of mature Aldo Conterno Cicala, twenty-four years on and right in the heart of its window. Cicala is one of the three flagship Bussia parcels Aldo bottled separately (alongside Colonnello and Romirasco), and it is the most muscular of the trio — its iron-rich, drier soils and south-southeast exposure give a Barolo built on power rather than perfume. 2001 was a great classical vintage in Piedmont, and Cicala's structure has used that long, slow arc beautifully. Aldo himself was at the helm here; this magnum format will have slowed the wine's evolution even further, keeping the fruit dense and the tannins still alive. A library Bussia from one of Monforte's defining traditionalists, in the format collectors hoard.

Antonio Galloni

"A darker-toned hue of ruby with violet highlights, the 2001 Barolo Cicala suggests new oak and spices on the nose, then opens to reveal a very complete and multi-dimensional wine that offers sensations of ripe dark cherries, minerals, menthol, tar, licorice and violets wrapped around a structured, masculine frame. A very fresh and long finish makes this a superbly well-balanced and beautiful wine. The Cicala cru gives wines of power and intensity owing to its poorer and dryer soils which contain more iron, as well as the vineyard's south to south-east exposure." —Antonio Galloni

"Nr Monforte d’Alba. Quite pale with wide pale rim. Coffee and spiced black cherry, very sweet and ripe on the nose with quite noticeable oak. First sign of undergrowth and truffles, getting stronger with time in the glass. Complex and delicious. Fresh and not overwhelmed by the oak."

Wine Spectator

"Loads of plum, berry and licorice character with hints of new wood. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, rich finish. Beauty here. Tight and compacted. Lots going on here. Give it time."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for the table — braised short ribs, brasato al Barolo, roast guinea fowl with porcini, or aged hard cheeses. The magnum format makes it a centerpiece bottle for a long Sunday lunch with friends who know.

Tasting Profile

Dense and savory: black cherry, dried rose, tar, licorice, sweet earth, a flick of mint. Still firmly structured for a 2001, with tannins giving way to a long, spice-shot finish. Power-forward Bussia in mature dress.
