"A fantastic wine from an epic vintage, the 2010 Clape Cornas is still at least five years away from hitting its stride, and I suspect it will still be impressing lucky wine-lovers for at least a decade after that. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black/blue fruits, candied flowers, incense, olive paste and Moroccan spices, with only a hint of gaminess in the background. Deeply concentrated and energetic, there’s an uncanny balance of richness and energy to the sweet black currant, cherry preserve and fruitcake flavors. Fine-grained tannins make a late appearance but are quickly absorbed by the lush, creamy fruit. I’d be in no hurry to drink this, but with a bit of aeration it’s a stunner." —Josh Raynolds

"I can’t say the same thing about the 2010 Cornas, as it’s crazily backwards, concentrated and structured, and needs some bottle age to round into form. Nevertheless, the incredible quality is present in its purity, focus, full-bodied richness and awesome finish. Give it another 3-4 years and enjoy it over the following 15-20 years (if not more)." —Jeb Dunnuck

"Meat and chocolate on the palate. Incredible intensity on the finish. Very bold and muscular, with a long life ahead of it – yet the tannins aren’t too harsh at this still-young age. There is clearly more to come in terms of flavour development."

Decanter

"An exceptional vintage in the Northern Rhône has produced a very full, lush and ripe style here. It has all the tannin and structure you could hope for, and it's searingly fresh, with delicious juicy berry fruits and an exceptionally long finish. It's a tempestuous style, ferric and violet-tinged at the same time. A great vintage for Clape, a soaring wine."

Wine Spectator

97 points

"Rock-solid and well-built, with a frame of charcoal and tar around a core of dark plum, blackberry and black currant fruit, revealing loads of tobacco, singed bay leaf and graphite notes in reserve. This should age beautifully, showing excellent range, character and definition."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"Rich, creamy and lush, this is like no other Clape Cornas before or since. Jammy raspberry fruit coats the palate, yet without seeming simple or heavy because there's also a remarkable sense of minerality and balance. Long on the finish, buffered by soft tannins. As this ages, expect to see some of the jamminess recede and more of the minerality emerge."

More about Auguste Clape

For lovers of the Northern Rhone August Clape needs zero introduction. Even those less familiar with the slopes along the river where Syrah reigns supreme have often heard the name. Clape is that important.

He almost single-handedly brought his home village of Cornas out of the old, négociant-centered model and into the estate-focused 21st Century. A former mayor of Cornas he is now synonymous with the best of what this village has to offer.

After nearly fifty years of winemaking, August is still going strong, though his son and grandson are doing much of the heavy lifting.
