Cross the line from Castiglione Falletto into Serralunga d'Alba and you arrive at San Rocco, a small MGA of clay-limestone marl with south-facing exposure. Luigi Scavino's Azelia farms a parcel of fifty-five-year-old vines here, and from a legendary 2010 vintage delivers a Barolo built on classic Serralunga architecture: dark fruit, licorice, mineral grip, and the kind of tannic length you only get from struggling vines on compact marl. Aged in Slavonian botti in Azelia's contemporary-traditional house style. Just entering its drinking window at fifteen years on, with a couple decades of evolution still ahead. A Barolo for cellaring patiently or carafing for two hours and serving with a roast.

Antonio Galloni

"Dark cherry, plum, smoke, menthol, melted road tar and graphite meld together in the 2010 Barolo San Rocco. A big, explosive wine, the 2010 blossoms in the glass with layers of deep, expressive fruit. The San Rocco is usually a wine of volume and breadth, at it is again in 2010. The firm Serralunga tannins are present, but they are also beautifully balanced. I can't wait to see how the 2010 develops. Today, the San Rocco is young, young, young." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"Vines in the San Rocco vineyard are 50 to 55 years old and have deep root systems that can withstand extreme weather. Azelia purchased this parcel in Serralunga d'Alba in 1992. The 2010 Barolo San Rocco is a wine of immense power and structure. It also shows impressive elegance and finesse, so you really get the best that Nebbiolo can offer. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, with anise seed, licorice, toasted almond and blue flower in supporting roles." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

92 points

"A modern style, offering vanilla and spice accents to the core of cherry flavors. Dense and firm on the finish, where menthol and resin notes prevail. Best from 2017 through 2028."

More about Azelia

Azelia is a small family winery founded in 1920 in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo, now in its fifth generation with Luigi leading the way alongside his wife Lorella and son Lorenzo. They work 16 hectares (75% Nebbiolo) with obsessive low-yield farming and zero vine replacement until natural end-of-life. Their 'normale' Barolo undergoes a punishing 50+ day maceration and ages entirely in large casks—modern in intent but classical in execution.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for slow-roasted meats: brasato al Barolo, leg of lamb with rosemary, or a porcini-laced beef stew. The tannic grip wants protein and fat. Aged Castelmagno or a wedge of Parmigiano works at the close.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, licorice, dried rose, and tar over a mineral, almost iron-tinged spine. The palate is firm and savory, with chewy, finely grained tannins and that classic Serralunga lift on a long, structured finish.
