Xurxo Alba's tiny parcel of 0.3 hectares sits at the water's edge of Galicia's Ría de Arousa, where 1980s-era vines root into granitic sand and drink the Atlantic's salt spray. Using indigenous yeast and a slow fermentation that blocks malolactic conversion, this single-vineyard Albariño maintains all its saline freshness and bright minerality. Eight months in neutral barrel with bâtonnage builds texture and complexity — a wine that melds dense fruit with mineral vibration and marked salinity. The 2024 came in on the fresh, high-acid side across Rías Baixas, so the citrus is sharper and the salinity more cutting than usual, with the leesy depth sitting just behind it. Drink it now with something from the sea, or give it a year or two for that texture to come forward.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Albariño Alma de Mar from a vineyard in Castrelo, Salnés, Rías Baixas that is right by the sea. Recently bottled, it is the only wine in the range to receive lees work. Fermented on lees, it opens with notes of anise, pear and white fruit, followed by a touch of custard, pastry, bread crust and rose petal. The palate is unctuous yet delicately fresh, with a smooth texture, creamy midpalate and saline finish. This is appealing, with an interesting flavor profile."

More about Bodegas Albamar

Xurxo Alba inherited his family's Albariño vineyards in Rías Baixas and in 2006 began bottling under his own name. He's quickly earned respect as one of the region's most talented young winemakers, using natural yeasts—just 2% of producers in the region do—and blocking malolactic fermentation to showcase the saline minerality that comes from Atlantic-facing coastal terroir. His Alma de Mar captures maritime freshness with genuine depth. This is Albariño made with intention.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

One of Xurxo’s top wines sourced from a single plot of 100% Albariño located next to the sea

Hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in various neutral vessels

Aged for 8 months in neutral barrel with consistent bâtonnage before being racked off the lees and rested for another 4 months before bottling

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled octopus, oysters on the half shell, seafood paella, or razor clams a la plancha.

Tasting Profile

Saline and bright, with lemon and green peach over mineral vibration; dense fruit balanced by cutting acidity and a savory, tide-pool finish.
