This is the easiest way into one of Austria's benchmark white-wine estates, and a neat lesson in why blending works. Willi Bründlmayer builds Terrassen from several terraced vineyards around Langenlois in the Kamptal, with vines between 260 and 380 metres up. The two levels do different jobs. The higher terraces are stony granite and mica slate. The lower ones are layered, fertile loess, which adds body and ripeness. Put together, they make a classic Grüner Veltliner with both finesse and vigour. It's certified organic, fermented cool in stainless steel and left on its fine lees until bottling, so nothing is dressed up and the fruit stays honest. At a moderate 12% alcohol and under screw cap, it's the bottle to keep in the fridge door, and it quietly shows why this estate's name carries so much weight.

"The 2025 Grüner Veltliner Kamptal Terrassen is picked across Bründlmayer's sites at various altitudes, mostly on loess, and was made entirely in stainless steel. The nose offers tender yeastiness and lemon vigor. The palate is super-slender, with a touch of white pepper reinforcing that Grüner vibe on the bone-dry finish." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Brundlmayer

Among the greatest estates in Austria and arguably among the very greatest white-wine producers in the entire world. Quality has gradually increased even further, under the watchful eye of Andreas Wickhoff, MW, who took the helm from Willi Bründlmayer in 2014.

The entry level wines are the purest examples of straight-up Kamptal Riesling and Grüner you could hope for. But the fancier bottlings are truly next level transmitting the multi-faced soil, aspect, elevation and micro climates throughout the Kamptal. The estate is always pushing the boundaries of what one could expect from their vines and with great effect.

Tasting Profile

Expect a classic Kamptal Grüner Veltliner: green apple, pear and citrus with the grape's signature white pepper and a hint of fresh herbs. Cool steel fermentation and time on the lees typically give a light-to-medium body with a little texture, bright acidity and a stony edge, finishing dry, crisp and clean.
