The red label is Bruno Giacosa's highest honor—reserved for wines of exceptional quality from only the greatest vintages. This is one of Piedmont's rarest and most celebrated bottlings. The Falletto estate, purchased by Giacosa in the early 1980s, encompasses thirteen hectares of south-facing vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, where calcareous clay soils in an amphitheater-shaped bowl produce Barolo of extraordinary structure and longevity. Unlike Giacosa's famous négociant Barbarescos, this is estate-grown fruit from his own vines. The 2000 vintage produced rich, opulent reds with round tannins, elegant character, and strong complexity. Macerated for up to thirty days and aged in large French oak botti for over three years before bottling, the wine is now over twenty-five years old and drinking magnificently—deep, powerful, and layered with tar, dried roses, and truffle character. Built for another two decades or more.

"I have had mixed experiences with Bruno Giacosa’s 2000 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto, but this bottle, from a case I purchased on release, is absolutely stellar. Intensely sweet, floral aromas soar from the glass. Radiant, open-knit and super-expressive, the Riserva captures all the best qualities of the vintage. It has been a few years since I last tasted the 2000. In that time, the wine appears to have barely budged at all, which will come as welcome news to readers who own it. The 2000 Riserva doesn’t quite reach the heights of the truly epic Giacosa wines of the era, but it comes close, especially on this night. I can only hope that future bottles show this well." —Antonio Galloni

"Fabulous purity of crushed fruit - strawberries and raspberries, with hints of fresh roses. Full-bodied, with an amazing concentration and a palate that goes on and on and on. Ultraripe tannins. This is the Romanée-Conti of Barolo. Terrific balance and richness. From selected parcels in Giacosa's Falletto vineyard. First made in 1997."

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.
