The Cavallotto family calls 2010 a modern-day classic for Nebbiolo. They compare it to 1990 and count it among the historic years for Bricco Boschis. The season went the way traditional Barolo likes it: a cold winter with plenty of snow and rain, a cool and very slow growing season, then sunny days and very chilly nights from August into October, and a near-perfect harvest of very healthy fruit. In the family's own words it was less powerful than 2008 and less voluptuous than 2006, which is about as good a definition of "classic" as you'll get. Bricco Boschis is the Castiglione Falletto hill the family owns outright, with calcareous marl at nearly 300 metres. This cuvée blends three parcels there: Colle Sud Ovest, Vigna Punta Marcello and Vigna San Giuseppe. Fashion has never changed how it's made. It ferments on indigenous yeasts. When Gildo Cavallotto picks out a great vintage, it's worth listening: he has kept weather records in the San Giuseppe parcel since 1970.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Sweet rose petals, hard candy, cinnamon, mint and new leather open up in the 2010 Barolo Bricco Boschis. Sweet, layered and exceptionally polished, the 2010 is a superb example of the year. At the same time, there is more than enough fleshiness to allow the 2010 to drink well with just a few more years in bottle. Expressive floral and spiced notes reappear on the finish. This is one of the best young vintages of the Bricco Boschis I can remember tasting." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2010 Barolo Bricco Boschis is the flagship wine from this historic estate in Castiglione Falletto. The personality here is dark and brooding with savory aromas of cured meat and smoked bacon in a leading role. The intensity is bright and vibrant and the longer you contemplate the wine, the more it offers. Following a few swirls of the glass, you encounter sweet cherry, white almond skin, licorice and pressed rose. Still young, the wine shows enormous complexity. Its balanced structure and acidity would pair next to succulent lamb chops or any number of sophisticated meat recipes. Drink: 2016-2026." — Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

"Bags of fruit and just the start of complexity – sweet baking spice and cigar box as it opens. Closed down on the palate with the fruit compressed between the fine, dry tannins but I think this is going to be fantastic."

Wine Spectator

"Wild, woodsy aromas of eucalyptus and juniper mark this muscular red. The rugged tannins set the pace, framing the cherry fruit and coating the gums on the finish. Stays long and energetic, with a mineral essence in the aftertaste."

Kerin O'Keefe

"Leather, balsamic herbs, black fruit and spice aromas lead the nose on this gorgeous wine. The delicious palate delivers ripe black cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice, cinnamon, black pepper and carob notes balanced by bold but noble tannins and vibrant acidity. This is a textbook Barolo that needs years to fully develop and will age for decades. Drink 2020 -2040." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Cavallotto

The village of Castiglione Falletto is rich with superstars—Giuseppe Mascarello, Brovia, Vietti, Scavino—and Cavallotto stands easily with the best of them. Of this elite group, Cavallotto's wines stand out for their deep fruit, brooding structure, rose petal aromatics, and incredible longevity.

Most of Cavallotto's grapes come from a hill called Bricco Boschis. Cavallotto owns all of it. Thanks to a mostly southern exposure at high altitude and a complex mix of limestone and clay, it's considered one of the top crus of a village known for many great crus. Cavallotto's San Giuseppe Riserva is made from the best grapes from the vineyard's oldest vines, mid-slope.

Cavallotto's other Riserva comes from Vignolo. It is next door to Bricco Boschis and just a little lower down the slope. The wine tends to be less powerful and more floral, and is perfect for drinking on a slightly earlier timescale than the San Giuseppe.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef braised in Barolo, tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle, roast leg of lamb with rosemary, or a wedge of aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic, traditionally made Barolo: red cherry, violets and tar, with savoury notes of dried herbs and spice. Typically it pairs power with elegance, its firm, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity carrying to a long, dry finish. Think red Burgundy's perfume with far more grip, fragrant enough to enjoy young but built to age.
