The domaine calls 2022 a great vintage for Chinon, and Varennes du Grand Clos is the kind of wine a year like that rewards: Joguet classes it as a vin de grande garde, a powerful red built for long ageing. Charles Joguet, the painter and sculptor who took over the family domaine in 1957, built a house where every parcel is harvested and vinified separately. This parcel sits at the foot of the gravel terrace on the left bank of the Vienne in Sazilly. It's about four and a half hectares of vines planted between 1962 and 1976 on clay and limestone soils rich in silica, and the domaine's Clos de la Dioterie lies directly above it. The 2022 growing season was a dry summer followed by a wet September, with no spring frost and dry air that kept disease away, and the domaine describes the wines as concentrated, with mineral freshness and exceptional ageing potential. The farming is certified organic, the fermentation is long and cool, and the wine spends 15 to 16 months in partly renewed French barrels. Set alongside what serious single-vineyard Burgundy costs, a cellar-worthy Cabernet Franc like this is one of the smarter bottles to buy now and leave alone for a while.

More about Charles Joguet

Joguet is another jewel in the Kermit Lynch portfolio, the domaine is situated just between the Loire and Vienne Rivers in the AOC of Chinon. Vinified separately, according to parcel since the 1950's, the estate is now run by winemaker Kevin Fontaine and wines are divided into 2 categories: those meant for early consumption, and those meant to age.

Flatiron's Take

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rosemary-roasted leg of lamb, duck breast with a cherry or blackcurrant sauce, braised beef cheeks, venison stew, wild mushroom risotto, or aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the serious, age-worthy side of Chinon Cabernet Franc: dark cherry, blackcurrant and violet, with graphite, a leafy, earthy edge and a subtle frame of French oak. Typically medium- to full-bodied, with firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, it finishes long and savoury. Think a more fragrant, lighter-footed Bordeaux.
