The wine that made Alexandre Chartogne's name, and still the clearest statement of what his village tastes like. Merfy sits north of Reims in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, well outside Champagne's famous addresses, and the Chartogne family has farmed there since the 15th century; Alexandre took over in 2006 after working with Anselme Selosse, and farms organically, plowing by horse and running sheep and chickens through the vines. Sainte Anne is roughly half Chardonnay with Pinot Noir and a splash of Meunier, built on the 2023 base wine and topped up with older reserve wine, fermented with native yeasts and aged in older oak barrels. It finishes Extra Brut with barely any dosage, which leaves the chalky cut of the wine completely exposed. Drink it now alongside food, or hold it a couple of years and let it fill out.

Antonio Galloni

"The NV Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne (base 2023) is laced with hints of dried flowers, chamomile and spice. Open-knit and airy, with lovely mid-palate presence, the Ste.-Anne is a delight. Citrus, marzipan and chamomile build into the refined finish. In this release, the Ste.-Anne is on the more delicate side. This release is based on 2023, with reserve wines from 2022, 2020, 2019 and 2018. Dosage is 3.5 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Based on the 2023 vintage, complemented by some 40% reserve wines, and disgorged in May 2026 with a dosage of four grams per liter, the latest NV Sainte Anne emerges from the glass with aromas of yellow apple, peach and spring flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and richly textured, it possesses a rich, sweet core of fruit, ripe yet vibrant acidity and an immediately charming profile. Matured in wood for nine months, it is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier. It is a lovely wine, even if it lacks the strong identity of Chartogne's best lieux-dits." —Kristaps Karklins

Wine Spectator

"This vibrant Champagne leads with an enticing floral note, opening on the raw silk–textured palate to reveal a finely meshed range of salted Marcona almond, ripe white cherry, blood orange pith and lime blossom flavors that echo through the lingering finish. Classy. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Disgorged April 2023. Drink now through 2028."

More about Chartogne-Taillet

After a stage with Antoine Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family estate and turned it upside down. He spent years experimenting and tinkering with every aspect of Champagne making from vine management to vessels. He's landed back where he says his ancestors started: in the vineyards, growing perfect fruit and aging in neutral oak.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
