Château Cantemerle holds a singular place in Bordeaux history: it was the last estate added to the 1855 Classification, secured after Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort successfully petitioned with supporting documentation. The Lords of Cantemerle are documented since the twelfth century, making this one of the Médoc's oldest properties. Classified Fifth Growth on fine gravel soils in Macau, the estate blends seventy percent Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The 2022 bursts with sweet blackberry, violet, rose petal, and spice—medium to full-bodied with an enveloping core of perfumed fruit framed by supple tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. Classed Bordeaux with nearly nine centuries of history at a remarkably accessible price.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2022 Cantemerle presents a relatively light but defined nose with notes of blackberry, wild hedgerow and a touch of undergrowth emerging with aeration. The medium-bodied palate features chewy tannins on the entry and a bit of rusticity, yet it offers a pleasant, lightly spiced finish."

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2022 Cantemerle offers up attractive aromas of minty blackberries, blueberries and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, broad and ample palate that's layered and textural, with a rich core of fruit largely concealing plenty of youthfully firm structuring tannin. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, this is a strong effort for this estate, situated on fine gravel soils in the southern Médoc." —William Kelley

Jancis Robinson

16.5 points

"Fragrant and floral. Fresh with a filigree finesse of tannin. Appetising fruit. Clean and long. Gentle hand on the tiller but deceptively structured all the same. Harmonious. Should be GV." —James Lawther MW

Decanter

94 points

"Clean and clear, immediately quite sleek and focused on the palate. Ripe and round but maintains direction from start to finish with succulence and supple fruit. Very lovely and very drinkable, clean and clear with balance and harmony. Dark fruit, cool freshness, mouthwatering acidity, slight graphite and flint touches and really well worked tannins. Impressive. Will be very enjoyable and easy to drink."

More about Chateau Cantemerle

Cantemerle is a 5th growth, located in Haut-Medoc with vineyards very close to Margaux. And, like a classic, mature Marguax, Cantemerle shows a wonderfully complex, spicy bouquet with age: tobacco, smoke, and mineral-infused cherry notes fill the nose before you even get close to the glass.
