This Chenin Blanc comes from vines planted in clay soils that sit on a bedrock of tuffeaux, the white chalky stone that you find in this area. The wine is made in a 13th century cave that is dug out of this tuffeaux. Its rich with pears and apricots and that chunky chalky minerality that only good Chenin Blanc can deliver.

Philippe Vatan and daughter Agathe run a fifth-generation estate tucked into the tufa limestone that borders the Loire Valley near Saumur. The Cabernet Francs are planted directly into that chalky tufa and taste like it—dark and mineral, alive with acidity, impossible to confuse with anything else. The whites are equally sharp and elegant. This is terroir speaking without softening.
