Third Growth Margaux from one of the smallest classified estates—now expanded. Founded 18th century by Gabriel Ferrière, royal official in charge of the king's hunts. The Villars family purchased in 1988 and took full control in 1992; now owned by Claire Villars-Lurton. Originally just 8 hectares (smallest classified growth); expanded to 20-24 hectares in 2012 with acquisition of vines from Château Bel Air-Marquis d'Aligre. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Organic certified 2015, biodynamic certified 2018. Innovation: 20% aged in small ovoid concrete vats.

Antonio Galloni

87 points

"Moderately saturated bright red-ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and musky game, with a strong leafy, herbal component. Offers moderate fruit intensity and density but comes across as a bit lean and green, even pinched for the year. Finishes slightly green and dry, with decent length. Lacks the dimension for a higher score." —Stephen Tanzer

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Smoky and silky, with enticing black tea, mulled spice and fleshy plum and black currant fruit that melds nicely together through the tobacco-filled finish."

Wine Enthusiast

90 points

"A solid effort, with attractive, balanced black currant fruits and ripe acidity. The wine layers fruit and integrated tannins. It feels chunky and dense, finishing dry." —Roger Voss
