This is real classified Bordeaux, a Fourth Growth in the 1855 classification, from a Haut-Médoc estate that gets far less attention than the famous Pauillac names nearby. That's exactly why it's worth a look. It also comes with better history than most: La Tour Carnet is a moated medieval castle with a tower from 1120. It's named after a squire who helped his lord hold out against the French crown at the end of the Hundred Years' War, and the family of Michel de Montaigne once owned it. The vines grow in Saint-Laurent Médoc on a thick layer of gravel over chalky clay. They're planted densely, at 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare for the grand vin, and farmed without herbicides. Bernard Magrez owns the estate along with three other Bordeaux classed growths, including Pape Clément. The 2018 is a good way into classed-growth Médoc for anyone who wants the history and the structure without chasing trophy labels.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2018 La Tour Carnet is fabulous. Bold, punchy and alluring in its beauty La Tour Carnet is wonderfully expressive, even in the early going. Cedar, tobacco, mint, dried flowers and licorice add layers of nuance to this deep, sumptuous Haut-Médoc from Bernard Magrez. The 2018 speaks with a dark, baritone voice that is undeniably alluring. But most importantly, the La Tour Carnet is shaping up to be one of best values in Bordeaux in 2018. I can't think of too many other wines that offer this much quality for the money. In 2018, the blend is 60% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. Tasted four times." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 la Tour Carnet is a little closed and broody to begin, slowly unfurling to offer glimpses at notions of tar, star anise, damp soil and tapenade with a core of stewed plums and boysenberries, plus a waft of cassis. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and bags of savory-laced black fruits framed by rounded tannins, finishing with a lively lift." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Decanter

"Clear, rippling black cherry and raspberry fruits; beautiful aromatics with floral edging. This has a pretty tight layer of tannins to navigate through before you get to the fruit, but it is early days and this has plenty of distinction to suggest that it will age well. Has character, but needs a good few years to soften."

Wine Spectator

"A beam of cassis and cherry fruit glides through, with light stone and iron accents. Pure and honest."

Wine Enthusiast

"The vineyards surrounding the 12th-century castle have produced this rich and densely structured wine. Powerful tannins give a smoky character to the ripe, black-plum fruits. It definitely needs aging, so drink from 2026." —Roger Voss

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rib-eye with bordelaise sauce; roast leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary; duck confit with potatoes cooked in duck fat; mushroom and beef bourguignon; aged Comté or Mimolette.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Haut-Médoc profile: blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, with cedar, graphite and a savoury, earthy edge. Cabernet Sauvignon from the gravel gives firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, while Merlot rounds out the medium-to-full body. Think a slightly more approachable take on Pauillac, finishing dry, structured and built to age.
