Fronsac is one of Bordeaux's great value frontiers, limestone hills next to Pomerol making serious Merlot for a fraction of the famous-name price, and La Vieille Cure is the appellation's reference estate. The 2009 vintage is a celebrated, ripe, generous Bordeaux year, and this Merlot-dominant red is drinking beautifully now while holding plenty in reserve. Round, plush, and remarkably complete for what it is. A smart bottle for those who love Right Bank style.

Robert Parker

93 points

"This property has made so many fine efforts lately that it is difficult to say the 2009 is better than their 2005. However, the 2009 is a charming, sexy, dense ruby/purple-colored offering displaying lots of ripe Merlot fruit intermixed with hints of charcoal, black raspberries, black currants, lead pencil shavings and truffles. This full-bodied, pure, nicely textured and layered Fronsac is a sleeper of the vintage that considerably over-performs for its modest price. Drink it over the next 15+ years. This is an obvious great value!" —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Solid, with a nice, pure beam of cassis and blackberry fruit subtly laced with licorice snap and tobacco notes. The polished finish has an iron accent in reserve. Should be a solid midterm ager. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"Barrel sample. Good dusty tannins, lively fruit, a wine that seems very complete. There is a touch of final wood and dark tannins." —Roger Voss

More about Chateau la Vieille Cure

American collectors Colin Ferenbach and Peter Sachs bought this Fronsac gem in 1986, and they've been patient stewards ever since. Twenty hectares in a single block of riverside terroir produce wines with real substance—ripe, generous, and built to age. It's one of the right bank's most dependable addresses.
