From Pomerol's highest point, adjacent to Pétrus, sits this 4.5-hectare gem built on deep gravel, clay, and iron-rich subsoil. The 2000 vintage was exceptional—warm, long growing season, perfectly balanced—and Lafleur captured it with a 50/50 Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend that's now 25+ years old and entering a legendary drinking phase. The high proportion of Cabernet Franc gives the wine its distinctive iron minerality and structure, keeping it from ever feeling soft despite Pomerol's reputation for plush wines. Drink it now for the marriage of ripe fruit and mineral tension, or cellar it another 10-20 years. This is serious Pomerol, made by the Guinaudeau family with precision and respect.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2000 Lafleur is a benchmark wine that prefigures the estate's wines in the 21st century. Though I have tasted it a dozen or so times from bottle, this was my first time in magnum…and what a wine! Showing only modest bricking at its rim, the nose is a symphony of aromas, an aromatic Pandora's Box: blackberry, wild hedgerow, black truffle, pencil box and gravel give way to more red fruit and rose petals. The palate has a heavenly balance with perfectly pitched acidity that effortlessly counterbalances the sheer weight and density of this wine. Previous examples have warned me away from cracking this open, but despite its larger format, this example is the first that entertains the notion of drinkability. That said, the 2000 is clearly a Pomerol that will span decades. The grandeur of this Lafleur is entrancing. Tasted from ex-château magnum at Kate & Kon's 40-Year vertical in Austria." —Neal Martin

"Tasted at Justerini & Brooks agency tasting in London. The Château Lafleur 2000 is a monumental wine. Imagine a Harley Davidson thundering down the tarmac. Wouldn't you want to get on? It has an extremely intense, but ineffably pure nose with more mineral expression than the Lafleur 1995. It has loosened up a little since I last tasted it, but I concur with Robert Parker that if I were lucky enough to have some of these in my cellar, I would wait until 2020 to experience the wine at its plateau. Allowing the wine to open over 30 minutes, I notice an almost flinty scent developing on the bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied, crystalline and symmetrical—everything beautifully focused—almost Left Bank in texture. This had a firm backbone, but that is becoming more "flexible" in recent years, and it fans out with consummate ease on a finish that is so long that it makes "War and Peace" seem like a short read. This is simply magnificent. Tasted February 2015." —Neal Martin

"A hand-crafted, exciting wine. Solid as rock. Bright aromas of violets, berries, cherries and lilacs. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and superbly refined, silky tannins. Long finish. This is a remake of the superb 1998. Much better than I found it in barrel. Best after 2013."

More about Chateau Lafleur

Pomerol's best kept secret sits near the plateau's edge where clay meets gravel. Lafleur's tiny production is prized by insiders who understand what small quantities of very old vines on exceptional terroir can achieve. The wines are profound, mineral-edged, and seriously age-worthy.
