Château Siran's history in Margaux dates to 1428, making it one of the oldest documented estates in the appellation—yet it was never classified in 1855 because the Toulouse-Lautrec family (great-grandparents of the artist) refused to attend what they viewed as a Bonapartist affair. The Miailhe family has owned the property since 1859, providing over a century and a half of continuous stewardship. The 2021 vintage marks a return to classic, Atlantic-influenced Bordeaux after a string of warm, powerful years: Cabernet Sauvignon thrived under the cooler conditions, producing wines of exceptional freshness and aromatic lift. This Siran shows perfumed wild strawberry and raspberry with silky tannins and bright acidity—elegant, immediately appealing Margaux at a fraction of classified-growth prices. Aged in thirty-five percent new oak, it emphasizes fruit and terroir over wood. Drink now or over the next dozen years.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"There is a large gap between the quality of the 2021 Siran and the Deuxième Vin because of the Merlot this year. Picked between September 23 and October 9, and matured in 35% new oak, the Siran has a delicate, perfumed bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry and light cassis scents. The palate is malleable, with fleshy red fruit that segues into darker fruit laced with graphite. Nicely balanced, albeit with less substance than the 2019 or 2020 (as you would expect), this Siran should drink well over the next 12–15 years." —Neal Martin

"Offering up aromas of cassis, redcurrant and plums, the 2021 Siran is medium-bodied, tart and ephemeral. It hasn't fulfilled the promise shown by the samples I tasted en primeur." —William Kelley

"Pretty, wild floral notes on the nose alongside fresh raspberry. Supple and agile, this has a lovely ease to it - not showy or too loud, but gentle and calm, delivering chalky, creamy red fruits with soft, fine, graphite-edged tannins. Pleasing acidity gives a persistent if not totally lively lift throughout, and this has an unfussy charm with lovely crushed stone salinity on the finish. No drop in the mid-palate, but lightly flavored with gentle persistency. Easy to enjoy."
