Don't be fooled by the name: Clos de la Roilette's Cuvee Tardive is a dry Fleurie, not a late-harvest sweet wine, named instead for its capacity to age. Alain Coudert sources it from the estate's oldest vines on heavy clay and manganese-rich soil, which gives his Gamay unusual structure and grip. The 2010 is a classic, fresh, age-worthy Beaujolais vintage, and with over a decade in bottle this is drinking gracefully now. A serious, soulful Fleurie.

"Bright violet color. Bright, mineral-driven aromas of black raspberry, cherry and fresh flowers. Opens with nervy red and dark berry skin flavors, then puts on weight in the glass, offering intense bitter cherry and dark berry flavors along with a touch of licorice pastille. The impressively long, smoky, gently tannic finish features sexy floral and spicecake qualities." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2010 Fleurie Cuvée Tardive is showing beautifully, unwinding in the glass with a lovely bouquet of black cherries, smoke, rose petals and summer truffles. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with an ample chassis of fine tannin and considerable concentration at the still-youthful core. Out of the gates, the 2010 Cuvée Tardive wasn't as lavish and dramatic as the 2009, but with almost a decade on the clock, the gap is closing: the 2010 is shedding its tannins and remains exceptionally pure and vibrant thanks to its somewhat higher acidity. This is an example of a nine-year-old Beaujolais that still possesses plenty of upside!" —William Kelley

More about Clos de la Roilette (Coudert)

Alain Coudert inherited a poorly maintained Fleurie vineyard in 1967 and spent five decades proving it could rival Moulin-à-Vent. His vines border Moulin-à-Vent and taste like it—richer, more structured, with clay and mineral manganese rather than pure granite. The Cuvée Tardive is built for aging, but even the regular Fleurie ages beautifully. A generational project completed and handed down.
