H. Klopp sits in the lower Sebastopol Hills at 350 feet, on the Goldridge sandy loam that defines great west Sonoma Chardonnay. Planted in 2013 by Ted and Lauren Klopp to a heritage mix — Robert Young, Old Wente, Mt. Eden, UCD4 — the site catches enough maritime air to keep things tight while ripening cleanly. Ross Cobb hand-harvests, whole-cluster presses, and ferments with native yeasts in French oak. The 2022 unfurls slowly: baked peach, jasmine, bread dough, allspice, and a flinty maritime edge, with silky texture and the kind of seamless oak integration that disappears into the wine. One of the most quietly compelling Chardonnays coming out of Sonoma right now.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2022 Chardonnay H. Klopp Vineyard is soft and open-knit. Lemon confit, tangerine peel, chamomile and mint are all layered in the glass. The 2022 is creamy and expressive in the understated style that is such a signature of Ross Cobb's wines." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2022 Chardonnay H. Klopp Vineyard unfurls slowly in the glass to reveal baked peaches, jasmine, bread dough, allspice and flint aromas. The light-bodied palate pairs concentrated, floral flavors with a luxuriously silky texture. It’s balanced by vibrant acidity and has a very long, gently honeyed finish. It’s dynamic, offering something new with each return to the glass, and will benefit from 3-5 years in the cellar. 275 cases were made." —Erin Brooks

Decanter

95 points

"A shining example of Sebastopol Hills terroir, the 2021 Cobb 'H. Klopp Vineyard' Chardonnay combines elegance and complexity. Grown on classic Goldridge soils and crafted from Old Wente, Mt. Eden, Clone 4, and Robert Young selections, this Chardonnay offers enticing aromas of citrus zest, sea breeze, and toasted hazelnut. The palate is bright and textured, revealing layers of fresh lemon cream, saline minerality, and a subtle hint of brioche. Refined and deeply expressive, this wine captures the cool-climate character of its coastal origins."

Wine Spectator

85 points

"Nutty and honeyed overtones give a distinctive note to the baked apple, poached pear and candied ginger flavors in this white, with accents of spices, toasted brioche and dried citrus zest, all on a smooth frame. Drink now."

More about Cobb Wines

Stephen and Ross Cobb are Pinot Noir obsessives working small, single-vineyard parcels on the far Sonoma Coast where their parents planted the first vines in Coastlands Vineyard back in 1989. Founded in 2001, they've stayed focused—Pinot Noir from coastal benchland, plus small amounts of Chardonnay and Riesling. No oak overload, no show. These are wines about place: the cold, the fog, the mineral dirt. They prove the West Sonoma Coast argument was right all along.
