Like its white sibling, this Montepulciano ferments and ages in concrete vats—a vessel that marries the energy of minimal intervention with fine-grained fruit expression. Dark berries, cherries, wet rocks, and herbs emerge in a wine that is ripe yet grounded, juicy yet refined. The eight to twelve months in concrete allows the fruit to breathe without oak's masking influence, revealing the true voice of De Fermo's biodynamic vineyard.

"Pale pink with an amber hue, the 2023 Rosato Concrete opens with a sweetly floral blend of sour cherries, lavender, spiced orange peels and wet stone. This is zesty within, with a tinge of tangerine and inner rose complicating white strawberries. The 2023 cleans up beautifully, packed with zesty tension and a saline saturation that keeps the mouth watering for more." —Eric Guido

More about De Fermo

Stefano Papetti Ceroni was a successful Bologna lawyer when he stumbled upon a 1785 winery buried under his wife Eloisa's family vineyards in Abruzzo. He scrapped his legal career, took no enology training, and taught himself biodynamic farming and minimal-intervention winemaking. Now his Montepulciano and Pecorino appear on the lists of top restaurants. Self-taught mastery.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

Produced exclusively from Montepulciano, this wine—effectively a “baby Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo”—offers immense charm and ease of use, with clean, tangy, juicy fruit, mouthwateringly saline minerality, and plenty of drive. It is straightforward without being simple—a tough feat to pull off as well as this wine does. This gets its glowing ruby hue from a brief two-hour maceration, after which it is pressed gently using an old manual screw-press and aged six months entirely in 20-hectoliter concrete tanks (hence the name). Like all of the estate’s wines, this is bottled without fining of filtration, and with a bare minimum of added sulfur.
