The most legendary name in Pouilly-Fume, full stop. Didier Dagueneau spent his short career proving Sauvignon Blanc could be built like Grand Cru Burgundy - barrel-fermented, bone-dry, aged on the lees, and capable of decades in bottle. Since his death in a microlight accident in 2008, his son Louis-Benjamin and daughter Charlotte have kept the cult intact. Pur Sang, meaning "thoroughbred," comes principally from the La Folie vineyard north of Saint-Andelain, planted on deep clay with chalky limestone — a different terroir from the flint-driven Silex cuvée, but a wine with its own electric, mineral core. The 2023 carries the Vin de France label rather than Pouilly-Fume - a now-familiar move for top Loire estates whose methods sit outside strict appellation rules, but the fruit, the vines, and the intent are unchanged. This is Sauvignon Blanc at its apex.

More about Didier Dagueneau

A legend who redefined Pouilly-Fumé on his own terms. Dagueneau was the enfant terrible of the Loire, publicly criticizing his neighbors and obsessing over detail until his untimely death in 2008. His son Louis-Benjamin now carries the torch with the same audacity and talent, proving that Sauvignon Blanc from this region can be world-class when you refuse to compromise. These wines have attitude.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for the table - Dover sole meuniere, scallops with brown butter, roast chicken with herbs, aged Comte, langoustines, or a simple plate of oysters with lemon. Old enough to handle truffle pasta or sweetbreads as it ages.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry, taut, and mineral. Lemon zest, white peach, white nectarine, orange blossom, and a hint of vanilla over a chalky, saline finish. Full-bodied for Sauvignon Blanc with a long, mineral spine and quietly explosive energy.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
