"This is quite a bit riper than its 2012 counterpart with very fresh aromas of black cherry, raspberry, spice and exotic tea nuances. The medium-bodied flavors possess exemplary mid-palate concentration as the copious dry extract really coats the palate and does a fine job of buffering the phenolically mature tannins that are quite firm but not hard. I very much like the seductive texture and overall this robust effort is going to need plenty of time in a cool cellar as it is clearly built to age."

"Deep red-ruby color. Aromas of black cherry, animal fur and dark chocolate. Very rich and classically dry, offering a suaver, finer-grained texture than the Champans. Shows a slightly roasted quality to its dark fruit flavors along with complicating notes of spices and espresso. Here the tannins are dusty and substantial but mellow." —Stephen Tanzer

"Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu showed just a touch of reduction, but otherwise there is appreciable blackberry and briary fruit here, tertiary/woodland scents with just a splash of balsamic. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good backbone, more backward than its peers and probably befitting another 12 months in bottle. Broody perhaps? Yet there is appreciable balance and its sturdiness will soften with time." —Neal Martin

"Malolactic fermentation finished in August. From a second-year barrel.Already bitter cherries on the nose and lots of lovely fruit on the palate. Bittersweet. Chewy end. Bright and promising. This tastes like a Volnay-Santenots rather than like a 2012!"

More about Domaine des Comtes Lafon

A Meursault institution that makes white Burgundy the way it should taste: rich but not heavy, layered but not overwrought. These Chardonnays from the Côte de Beaune sit at the intersection of power and elegance, especially the prized Clos de la Baronne, where the limestone terroir speaks clearly. The house has built its reputation on consistency and refinement—wines that age gracefully and reward patience. If you want to understand what limestone and lees aging can do in the hands of masters, this is where to start.
