One of only two Grand Crus in Burgundy that bears its producer's name on the label (alongside Romanee-Conti). Faiveley's Clos des Cortons is a 2.76-hectare (2 ha 76 a 52 ca) monopole on the legendary Corton hill, a holding so historically tied to the family that the INAO permitted the Faiveley name to remain stitched into the appellation itself. The 2019 vintage delivered Cortons of unusual concentration and grip, and under Erwan Faiveley (seventh generation) and winemaker Jerome Flous, this bottling shows the dark fruit, mineral spine, and stately structure that have made Clos des Cortons a touchstone of red Corton for generations. A serious cellar wine just beginning a long life.

"Here too there is a mentholated top note to the much earthier aromas of poached plum, underbrush, red currant and touches of the sauvage. There is excellent verve to the equally broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess outstanding complexity on the tannic, serious and beautifully long finish that is a bit less austere than it usually is at this early juncture. This beautifully well-made effort will also require extended bottle age to reveal its full potential, but it should very much be worth the wait."

"The 2019 Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru comes from the 2.77-hectare monopole. This was actually quite closed on the nose compared with Faiveley’s Gevrey Grand Crus, coming across earthy and rather sullen at first, and opening with earthy/woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and harmonious on the entry. The fine, lightly spiced finish reveals clove and touches of graphite. Nice persistence here. This holds a lot of promise." —Neal Martin

"The 2019 Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Faiveley opens in the glass with notes of cassis, wild berries, warm spices, orange rind, rose petals, espresso roast and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's vibrant and lively, marrying notable concentration with fine-boned structure. Long and mineral, it's more ethereal than its rich, muscular 2018 counterpart." —William Kelley

"Barrel sample. Bright (rather than deep) crimson. A little simple and sweet with lots of acid and tannin. Dry, light finish. Drying finish. Difficult to warm to."

Decanter

"From the 2.77ha Clos des Cortons Faiveley in the lieu-dit of Corton et Rognet in Ladoix, the wine is silky and subtle, almost un-Corton-like in its subtlety. This has marvellous elegance and a sharp, delineated cherry and earth fruit character. Structured, tannic, yet supple and approachable, this will drink young but age for decades."

Wine Spectator

95 points

"This is plump and juicy, featuring black cherry, plum, tomato leaf and sweet spice flavors. There are firm tannins underneath and this is long, with echoes oak spice in the aftertaste. Be patient." —Bruce Sanderson

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck with cherry reduction, squab, venison loin, or a properly aged ribeye. Earthy partners welcome: morel risotto, truffled potato gratin, or aged Comte once the wine has had an hour of air.

Tasting Profile

Dense black cherry, cassis, and crushed violets give way to forest floor, iron, and warm stone. The palate is broad and tightly wound, with firm Corton tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Cellar five-plus years for full unfurling.
