Faiveley's flagship Nuits-Saint-Georges and a wine the INAO has been quietly evaluating for Grand Cru promotion. Les Saint-Georges sits at the southern end of the village, on the Premeaux border, and its dark, ferrous, deeply structured Pinot has long been considered the equal of many Grand Crus in surrounding villages. The Faiveley family has been based in NSG since 1825, and this is their hometown statement. The concentrated, structured 2019 vintage suits Les Saint-Georges perfectly, building a wine of brooding depth and serious tannin. A future classic that wants real time in the cellar before it reveals its full hand.

Burghound

"A moderately toasty nose reveals notes of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a touch of the sauvage. The mid-palate of the succulent, round and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors contrasts significantly with the overtly austere, compact, slightly warm and very serious finish that makes clear this is very much built for long-term cellaring. Excellent quality provided you have the patience to wait." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru is an equal blend from Faiveley’s own vines and contract growers, plus a barrel from the Hospices de Nuits. It has a very perfumed and floral bouquet of red berry fruit complemented by wilted violets and potpourri. The medium-bodied palate offers crunchy red berry fruit laced with balsamic. Quite energetic and well defined toward the harmonious finish, which leaves a tang of white pepper on the aftertaste. This is a superb Les Saint-Georges." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"A mixture of domaine and purchased grapes that are vinified together, Faiveley's 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges wafts from the glass with notes of sweet berries, plums, espresso roast, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and gourmand, it's sumptuous and charming, with lively acids and a ripe, enveloping core of fruit." —William Kelley

Decanter

"The Faiveley holding here is 0.23ha of very old vines, the oldest being planted in the 1930s. The wine is extremely ripe, with a deep plummy fruit and an accent that almost says cacao. One might mistake it for a voluptuous Volnay, but there is too much tannic structure. A delightful wine, which should age for decades."

More about Domaine Faiveley

Faiveley is an Iconic Domaine in the best sense of the term. They have both history and pedigree (almost 200 years and 7 generations old), but also innovation as current managers Erwan and Eve Faiveley look to the future.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roasted game birds, braised short ribs, or a rare seared duck breast. Stronger cheeses (aged Epoisses, Langres) suit it once decanted. Hold off on delicate preparations: this wine wants weight on the plate.

Tasting Profile

Black cherry, plum skin, and iron filings on the nose, with hints of sous-bois and clove. Full-bodied and tightly muscled, the tannins are dense and chalky, the finish long and savory. Decant generously now or cellar another five to ten years.
