“Pure” comes from a tiny plot of century-old Grenache vines on sandy soils in the northern sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These soils—combined with the age of the vines and a meticulous, hands-off approach in the cellar—give a wine that defies the stereotype of Châteauneuf as heavy or overripe. Instead, it’s layered, aromatic, and quietly powerful, with incredible finesse.

The 2021 vintage, cooler and lower in yields than many recent years, highlights all of that restraint and elegance. Expect aromas of wild strawberry, dried rose petal, white pepper, and garrigue, with a palate that’s both expansive and lacy. Silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, stony finish make this feel almost like Grand Cru Pinot Noir in a Grenache suit.

Drink it now with a long decant, or cellar it for 10–20 years—it has the structure and balance to age into something profound.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure is a beautifully layered red. Orange peel, rose petal, ripe red fruits, crushed violets and black cherry define the fragrant aromatic profile. White pepper elements add a spicy complexity. Framed by seamless tannins and finishing with excellent length, the 2021 comes highly recommended. Readers should note that there will be no 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure due to crop-reducing hail damage on August 14th." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

"The 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure—Grenache from a single parcel—boasts impressive aromatics of crushed stone, floral notes of roses and lavender and mixed berries. It's medium to full-bodied, concentrated, firm and tannic—perhaps overly so? In obvious need of cellaring, cautious buyers may wish to seek out the 2020 or hold out for the 2022, but I suspect the 2021 will come around in due time." —Joe Czerwinski

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"This wine has an innate power, yet to be unleashed. The bouquet reveals enticing notes of black plum, strawberry, black licorice, underbrush, and a whisper of mint. On the palate, it remains understated for now, with juicy black cherry, olives, and dried herbs subtly emerging through a delicate veil of cocoa powder, hinting at greater depth yet to be discovered. Patience is key and will unlock its true potential." —Anna-Christina Cabrales

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

97% Grenache, 3% other varietals. Pure is handcrafted from a single plot of 100-year-old vines and sandy soil, at the junction of “Grand Pierre”, “Rayas” and “Pointu” districts. Underripe stems are removed, and the wine is fermented in underground concrete vats. The wine stays on the skins for over 4 weeks, followed by a gentle extraction.
