Burghound

"A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they’re finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that’s your preference." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has an elegant, correct, almost conservative bouquet, a bit like a Swiss watch in terms of its precision. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine silky tannin, perfect acidity, very pure with moderate substance, hints of orange zest and marmalade towards the vivacious finish. You could almost drink this now." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is one of the more ethereal wines in the cellar, exhibiting classy aromas of red cherries, spices, rose petal and rock salt. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and satiny, with delicate but chalky structuring tannins, bright acids and lovely purity of fruit. I suspect it will improve further before it's bottled." —William Kelley

"Particularly transparent garnet. Powdery nose of ground pebbles. Then immensely sweet, flattering fruit. You could almost drink this tonight! Very accessible fruit even if there is clearly much more complexity to come. And on the finish there is no shortage of fine tannin. Completely seductive. Very precisely judged."

Decanter

"Deeper in colour than some of the d'Angerville wines in 2017, although that is no indication of quality, this comes from the high part of the premier cru close to the Clos des Chênes. Dense yet focussed with stylish, scented oak and a sturdy tannic backbone, this is another classy red from François Duvivier. Drinking Window 2024 - 2032."

More about Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.
