Volnay from the appellation's benchmark estate, in a warm and generous vintage. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of Burgundy's most legendary addresses — now run by Guillaume d'Angerville (his father Jacques passed in 2003), biodynamic since 2006, and the reference point for elegant, restrained Volnay. Les Caillerets sits in the upper slope of Volnay on shallow, reddish, stony limestone — one of the commune's three most famous 1er Crus alongside Champans and Clos des Chênes. The site gives a wine of mineral cut woven through pure red fruit, with the kind of elegance that prompts the old saying "who has no vines in Caillerets does not know what Volnay is worth." 2018 was warm and generous; this is showing beautifully now with the structure to keep evolving.

"This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable wood influence and even here it is a background element on the markedly ripe aromas of cassis plum liqueur and exotic tea-scented nose. The strikingly refined middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the rich but lilting finale where the only reproach is a subtle touch of warmth. Lovely stuff though make no mistake, it should amply reward extended cellaring." —Allen Meadows

"The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru includes an additional 0.23-hectare adjoining parcel of old vines purchased in 2013 that represents a 50% increase in acreage. It has a more reticent bouquet compared to its siblings, demanding coaxing from the glass to revealing morello cherry, raspberry preserve and rose petal aromas. Hints of blood orange develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with darker berry fruit than d’Angerville’s other Volnay, and a little spicier, displaying impressive depth and grip toward the finish. It will require 5–6 years in bottle. Excellent." —Neal Martin

"Aromas of red berries, cherries, dark chocolate and peonies mingle with nuances of soil and raw cocoa, introducing the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets, a medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated wine that's fine-boned and elegant, with powdery tannins and a chalky, mineral finish." —William Kelley

More about Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.
