This is Muscadet given three full years on its lees. The family ages its Monnières-Saint-Fiacre cuvée for 36 months, which puts it a world away from the quick, cheap oyster wine most people picture. It's one of Muscadet's crus, a system set up to single out the best terroirs within the Loire's largest appellation. Monnières sits at the heart of the Sèvre et Maine subregion. The fruit comes from the domaine's best plots on the hill of the Moulin de la Minière. At 58 metres it's one of the highest points in the Nantes vineyard (modest, sure, but in this flat country it counts), right where the Sèvre and Maine rivers meet. The family's story on that hill starts in 1734, and the domaine's name records a marriage of holdings: grandparents Monique Gaborit and André Ménard joined their vines into one estate. The sixth generation now runs it, and the domaine has been certified organic since 2020. If you still think of Muscadet as a bargain-bin afterthought, this bottle should change your mind, and it's remarkable quality for the price.

Perfect Pairings

Porcini risotto, smoked eel or hard cheeses. It also works with a mixed seafood platter or roast chicken in a cream sauce.

Tasting Profile

Expect a richer, more textured Muscadet than the usual oyster wine: lemon, green apple and pear, with the bready, brioche and nutty notes that long lees ageing typically brings. The palate is dry and fuller than you'd expect, with salty, stony minerality and bright acidity, finishing long and savoury. Think of it as a fleshier cousin of Chablis.
