The Mugneret sisters run one of Burgundy's most quietly revered small domaines, and their followers chase every bottle for the same reason: precision, purity and a total absence of showiness. Les Chaignots sits at the northern edge of Nuits-Saint-Georges, right up against the Vosne-Romanee border, which lends it the more perfumed and elegant side of Nuits rather than the appellation's usual brawn. The 2015 comes from a great warm, ripe vintage — round and powerful, with the aromatic complexity and long, refined finish that are this house's signature. It's drinking beautifully now but has years of life left. Cult Burgundy that lets the terroir do the talking.

Burghound

"A distinctly spicy nose offers up ripe aromas of cassis, plum, mocha and violet that are trimmed in subtle earth nuances. There is fine volume and mid-palate density to the strikingly rich and suave medium-bodied flavors that display excellent persistence and complexity on the firm and lightly mineral-suffused finish that, like the Vignes Rondes, flashes a hint of dryness though in this case, I suspect that it will eventually come together and my rating offers the benefit of the doubt."

Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet, dark berry fruit, light mulch aromas, incense and potpourri, very complex and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied and lightly spiced with ferrous red fruit and impressive weight. This was the last vintage that was fully destemmed." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots from the Mugneret sisters is glorious, offering up a deep and complex bouquet of raspberry, plum, dark spice, wood smoke, black chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and expansive, with a supple frame of tannin, a deep core of succulently ripe fruit and a long, intense and youthfully tight-knit finish. This has great potential and will amply reward the patient." —William Kelley

More about Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

In Vosne-Romanée, the Mugneret-Gibourg family crafts Pinot Noir from parcels that sit in some of Burgundy's most storied ground. North Berkeley Imports champions these wines, recognizing their singular expression of Côte de Nuits terroir. These reds taste like they've been rooted in terroir for centuries, even if the vines are younger. Serious stuff from a producer who lets the vineyard speak instead of imposing technique.
