Step into Premier Cru territory with Duroché's primary holding in this celebrated vineyard. Lavaut Saint-Jacques represents one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most notable Premier Crus, and this parcel features plantings from various decades (1923, 1938, 1952, 1962, 1971, 1981), creating a complex multi-age blend. The 2023 shows complex aromas of black berries and spices with medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered structure. Lively acidity and velvety tannins frame the profile: raspberries, plums, spices, candied peel, woodsmoke, and rose petals. Hand-harvested from these ancient vines, de-stemmed, natural yeast fermented, aged 15-16 months on fine lees with maximum 15% new oak. This is Duroché's philosophy applied to old vines on Premier Cru terroir—precision allowing each element to be heard.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a fresh nose with red berry fruit, pine and light cedar scents that gain intensity in the glass, delivering subtle Earl Grey scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and gentle grip with a pleasing edginess on the refined finish. Maybe more earlier drinking compared to other cuvées." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes is one of the wilder, more carnal wines in the range this year, offering up aromas of cherries, dark berries, orange zest, sweet spices and game bird, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's structured and muscular." —William Kelley

More about Duroche

Gilles Duroché and his son Pierre run eight hectares of Gevrey-Chambertin, spanning village, premier cru, and grand cru levels across the appellation's finest sites. Hand-harvested, minimal oak—wines made to let the grapes reveal their purest form. Pierre is the fifth generation to work the vines here, taking over from his father in 2007. Fourth and fifth generation Burgundy, made with the kind of attention to detail that separates the serious from the pretenders.
