A sixteen-plus-year-old Kabinett from Scharzhofberg, one of the greatest vineyards in Germany — and exactly the wine the estate says rewards patience, since its Scharzhofberg Kabinetts develop enormous complexity with proper storage. Egon Müller is the undisputed king of German Riesling, six generations deep on the Saar, and Kabinett is where that house style is most disarming: analytically fruit-sweet, but with so little alcohol behind it (usually 7 to 10 percent) that it can taste surprisingly dry. The vines grow in heavily weathered slate that lets roots drive deep, and it's that mineral intensity plus the Saar's fine-grained acidity that frames the fruit rather than smothering it. Winemaking is deliberately minimalist, built on the quality philosophy of the late Egon Müller III — nothing here is added to a vineyard that doesn't need help. Mature Müller Kabinett in a market that mostly drinks it young is the sort of bottle we don't pass on.

"Relying on some of his oldest, single stake-trained vines just behind the Scharzhof, Muller's 2009 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett A.P. #16 – his auction cuvee of that Pradikat – is alluringly scented with iris, lily-of-the-valley-the-valley, fresh quince, and pear distillate. Liquid floral and orchard fruit essences on a delicate, satin-textured palate are complimented by hints of honey, diverse brown spices, browned butter and shrimp shell reduction, all of which make for a luscious, mouthwateringly savory and memorably long, complex finish. This should be worth following for two decades." —David Schildknecht

"Intriguing, very introvert nose. Clearly an extremely youthful wine to judge from its very embryonic bouquet. Great slap of ripe fruit on the front palate with finely etched texture and acidity in abundance. Very different from the vintage norm of open, easy, fruity charm. This is more of a complex patchwork. Flowers and lime and potential. Almost painful to taste at this stage." —Jancis Robinson MW

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Wonderful at lunch, which is the estate's own point about these low-alcohol Kabinetts: try it with smoked trout and horseradish cream, chicken schnitzel with lemon, Vietnamese summer rolls with peanut sauce, Sichuan dan dan noodles, or a plate of aged Comté and prosciutto.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and low in alcohol. Gently sweet on entry but the Saar acidity is fine-grained and cutting, so it reads far drier than the sugar suggests. Slate minerality runs through the middle.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
