One of Monforte's most quietly authoritative Barolos, at the peak of its powers. Elio Grasso is among the village's iconic traditional houses, working two adjacent flagship parcels high on the Ginestra hill. Gavarini Chiniera comes from the Chiniera block within the Ginestra MGA, fully south-facing, with thinner clay-rich, calcareous-sandy soils that lend the wine its trademark fragrance and tensile elegance, in contrast to the broader-shouldered Ginestra Casa Mate from next door. The great 2001 vintage was tailor-made for Grasso's style. Twenty-four years on, the wine has shed its youthful tannic armor and is showing classical Monforte depth wrapped in silky texture. Drink now and over the next several years; this is mature Barolo at its most expressive.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2001 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera opens with a beguiling, totally exotic bouquet. Sweet roses, Mirabelle plums, spices, tar and mint are some of the many nuances that emerge from the glass. The 2001 has gained quite a bit of body and volume over the last few years. This is a pretty big style for the Chiniera, even if the wine isn't quite as polished as the very best vintages" —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"Plum and cedar aromas rise from the glass following through to a full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a juicy, fruity aftertaste. Already delicious. This is always excellent. Best after 2008."

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.
