Over the past decade Elvio Cogno has joined Piedmont's elite by mastering one specific terroir, and this is its heart. Ravera is the historic cru of Novello that wraps around the estate's hilltop winery, and 2010 is one of the great classic Barolo vintages, a cool, elegant year built for the long game. Now maturing, this traditionally made Nebbiolo shows what patience delivers: powerful structure softening into savory complexity, with tannins that have started to unwind. It's dark-fruited and earthy, streaked with tobacco, truffle, and dried herbs. A serious Barolo from a serious producer, drinking beautifully.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"Cogno's 2010 Barolo Ravera emerges from some of the oldest vineyards in the property. Dark red cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and smoke meld together in a sumptuous wine that impresses for its breadth and volume. At the same time, there is plenty of Ravera minerality supporting the fruit. The Ravera doesn't have the early appeal of the Cascina Nuova, rather it is a wine for the cellar. Hints of savory herb and floral notes with a faint suggestion of Chinato wrap around the finish." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2010 Barolo Ravera shows extreme elegance and precision with dark fruit, spice, dried tobacco, hazelnut and black truffle. The Ravera cru makes rich and powerful wines and Elvio Cogno has masterfully captured these territorial qualities. Drink: 2016-2028." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

"Novello. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Spectacular nose of undergrowth and cherry and minerally stony notes. Iron. Succulent, waxy cherry fruit with a rich layer of coating tannins. Fantastic balance and length. Tactile fireworks and complexity on the finish."

Decanter

96 points

"The highly revered 2010 vintage saw moderate temperatures with marked diurnal differences here, leading to a harvest of ripe, healthy fruit in mid-October. This is also the year Fissore introduced organic practices in his vineyards. Still fresh and youthful, it demonstrates exceptional focus of mint, forest herbs and rose. It's a powerfully structured thoroughbred with succulent acidity that lifts and carries the wine to a long, savoury finish. This is brilliantly proportioned and stately."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Cherry and raspberry flavors mingle with earth, licorice and tar notes. This red cuts a broad swath, presenting a dense texture and muscular tannins, finishing fresh and delineated, with accents of leather and black tea. Best from 2018 through 2035."

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"Cogno helped put the Novello village on the Barolo-lovers’ map. This wine opens with fragrances of red and black berries, rose, baking spice and leather. The vibrant palate delivers wild cherry, raspberry, mint, sage, thyme and cocoa accents alongside bracing tannins and nervous acidity. Drink after 2020." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.
