This is Pinot Noir from the first Pinot Noir vines planted in the Willamette Valley: the Original Vines at The Eyrie Vineyard, where David and Diana Lett planted the first wine grapes in the Dundee Hills from cuttings David brought to Oregon in 1965. He arrived at 25 with "3,000 grape cuttings and a theory," that stylistically pure Pinot Noir could be grown well outside Burgundy. He was right: his 1975 Pinot Noir became the first American Pinot to hold its own against great Burgundies, in Paris in 1979. The site is small, 17 acres on a hillside between 260 and 410 feet. It's named for the red-tailed hawks whose nest (an eyrie) is still there every year. Son Jason Lett took over as winemaker in 2005, kept production small, switched to native-yeast fermentation and farms the estate certified organic. Eyrie also holds some older wines back for later release and checks them with a 21-step quality process. This Reserve is from 2014, so it already has a decade-plus of age on it. A chance to taste Oregon's founding vineyard with real bottle age doesn't come along often, and this is it.

"Deep bright-rimmed red. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh red and blue fruits, potpourri and smoky minerals, backed by a sexy Asian spice flourish. Shows impressive energy and tension on the palate, offering gently sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors that are underscored and sharpened by a peppery spice nuance. Shows outstanding clarity and floral lift on the strikingly long, penetrating finish, which is shaped by smooth, well-judged tannins." —Josh Raynolds

"Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2014 Pinot Noir Original Vines Reserve has a fragrant nose of rose petals and pomegranate over suggestions of anise, dried Mediterranean herbs, chargrill and fungi. Light-bodied and quite tightly-wound at this youthful stage, it has a great intensity of delicate red berry and earth flavors with chewy tannins and good persistence." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"These are in fact the original Pinot Noir vines planted in the Willamette Valley, back in the mid-1960s. An explosion of sensory detail quickly opens up the wine, with pollen, sandalwood, sassafras and coffee grounds. Those flavors wrap around blackberry, licorice and cola, continuing to expand and explore the far reaches of the palate. Phylloxera may soon eliminate these vines, so don't wait to acquire a bit of history in a bottle."

More about Eyrie

David Lett planted the first Pinot Noir vines in Oregon's Willamette Valley in 1965 and released the first vintage in 1970. He also pioneered Pinot Gris in America. His 1975 Reserve placed second at the 1979 Wine Olympics, losing by a hair to a 1959 Burgundy. David's vision transformed Oregon from a wild frontier into a world-class Pinot region.

Tasting Profile

Expect the restrained, Burgundian style Eyrie is known for: red cherry, raspberry and cranberry, plus the earthy, forest-floor and spice notes Pinot Noir picks up as it matures. It's typically light to medium-bodied with bright acidity and fine, silky tannins, finishing dry and long. Think village Burgundy rather than a riper, fuller New World Pinot.
