Lavaux Saint-Jacques sits in the conversation with Les Cazetiers and Clos Saint-Jacques as one of the three great Premiers Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, and Faiveley's version is the more nuanced, more delicate of their two holdings up there. The parcel is small — just under a hectare, south-facing, on fossil-bearing rock and clay at the northern end of the village right before the combe opens up. That sun exposure is the whole story: it gives a Gevrey of real black-fruited concentration rather than the leaner, more austere style the northern end can produce. Faiveley only got their hands on it in 2013, as part of a larger Gevrey purchase, which makes this 2015 one of the early bottlings from a site their technical director Jerome Flous makes no secret of loving. Everything is hand-harvested and hand-sorted, moved into wooden vats by gravity, and raised in French oak. Ten years on, this is a mature bottle — the kind of thing to open for a serious dinner rather than a Tuesday.

Burghound

"A distinctly earthy, cool and ripe nose flashes notes of red and black cherries nuanced by hints of smoke, the sauvage and crushed herb. Interestingly, the powerful and very serious middle weight flavors are relatively refined thanks to the dense but fine-grained tannins that shape the punchy, intense and stony finish that is presently youthfully austere. This is also built-to-age and is going to need it." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Bright dark red. Slightly reduced, youthfully medicinal aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Surprisingly rich and sweet on the palate if a bit reduced, offering rather soft, pliant flavors of black cherry, dark berries, menthol and minerals. Finishes with plush, horizontal tannins and very good length. Quite plush in the style of 2015 but I wanted a bit more structure and reserve. Still a bit reduced." —Stephen Tanzer

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"This intensely perfumed wine has great ripe fruits and delicious acidity. It is richly endowed both with tannins and spicy wood flavors that give extra body and density. This will be a very fine wine as it ages, but wait until 2024." —Roger Voss

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, coq au vin, squab, mushroom and thyme tart, or a rib of beef with roasted root vegetables. Also excellent with roast turkey and all its trimmings — this is our Thanksgiving Burgundy. Soft washed-rind cheeses like Époisses work at the end of the meal.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby red, with aromas of small black fruits — fresh blackberry and blueberry — in the house style. The palate is powerful, warm and concentrated, but with more finesse and detail than sheer muscle, and the tannins have had a decade to settle. Dry, with firm Pinot acidity holding it together and a long, savory finish.
