This is the wine that made people take Austrian Pinot Noir seriously. Holzspur is a single vineyard in Tattendorf, a flat, gravelly valley-floor site with limestone-rich alluvial soils that the Reinisch family treats as their flagship, and it's their most complete expression of what the Thermenregion can do with this grape. The fruit is hand-harvested, fermented with native yeast, and aged in French barrels with a deliberately light touch of new oak, all in service of letting the vineyard speak. 'Ried' is Austria's word for a named single vineyard, and this is one worth remembering. When Pinot fans want to be surprised, this is the bottle to reach for.
