Austria isn't the first place you'd look for serious Chardonnay, which is exactly why this one is such a happy surprise. Lores is a cool single vineyard in Tattendorf, planted to Burgundian clones on black earth and gravel, and it's where the Reinisch family makes their most ambitious white. It's fermented and aged in lightly toasted barrels and rests about ten months on its lees, which lends a creamy, saline texture without ever tipping into heaviness. 'Ried' marks it as a named single vineyard, the estate's top tier. Bring it to a dinner and let people guess where it's from.

"The 2022 Chardonnay Ried Lores, grown on limestone with chernozem cover at 220 meters of elevation, is the lowest-lying of the Reinisch family's vineyards. The vines were planted in 1987 to Clone 95. This was fermented half in new and half in second-use small, mostly French barrels with a smaller proportion of Austrian oak. The nose is an elegant union of smoke, lemon and roasted hazelnut against a backdrop of chalk. The palate is superbly precise and wonderfully contoured with incisive lemon and chalky notes. This has power but also much fluidity, drive and wonderful length."
