Famille Mousse, Champagne Eugene Rose Extra Brut [2023], NV

A rosé built on Mousse's perpetual reserve, a solera-style blend running back to 2003, which is why it has a depth and savory grip most pink Champagne never gets near. It is Meunier-led with Pinot Noir, from forty-year-old vines in Cuisles, Jonquery and Chatillon-sur-Marne, rooted in the green illite clay over limestone marl that makes this corner of the Vallee de la Marne unusual; the color and the red-fruit lift come from a small addition of the estate's own still red wine. Roughly half the blend is the most recent harvest and half that reserve, everything ferments in stainless steel with the Meunier portion resting in older barrels, and it spends about eighteen months on the lees before being disgorged with barely a couple of grams of dosage. The cuvee honors Eugene Mousse, who bottled the family's first Champagne under its own name in 1923. Cedric Mousse farms organically here; a fire destroyed the family's winery in the summer of 2026, and this wine was made and bottled well before it. Pour it at the table rather than as a wave-through aperitif — it has the frame for food.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
