Morgeot is Chassagne's largest premier cru — a vast climat that straddles the village's southern flank and produces more red Pinot than any of its neighbors. Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard sits among the top names in the village and brings the same care to its reds that it does to its grand cru whites. The Morgeot Rouge tends to run deeper and more structured than the Clos Saint-Jean: darker fruit, a touch more grip, more savory edge. The 2017 vintage was classical and balanced, and at eight years on the wine is just settling into its window with cherry, plum, undergrowth, and a stony Chassagne backbone. A serious red Burgundy from a producer better known for whites — and priced accordingly.
