Francesco Rinaldi e Figli is old-school Barolo at its purest, a family estate making classic, uncompromising Nebbiolo since the family began bottling under its name in 1906. This is their straight Barolo, made the traditional way with long macerations and extended aging in big Slavonian oak casks, never new oak, so the fruit and the famous Nebbiolo perfume come through unmasked. The 2010 is widely considered one of the great modern Barolo vintages: structured, classically proportioned and built for the long haul. Now well over a decade old, it's beginning to enter a lovely drinking window but still has plenty in reserve. Decant generously. Real, traditional Barolo from a quietly great name.

One of the last of the old-school Barolo traditionalists. Founded in 1870 in Barolo proper, run now by nieces Paola and Piera Rinaldi (and Piera's daughters). No new oak, long maceration, aged in huge Slavonian oak botti—exactly how they did it a hundred years ago. Brunate and Cannubi are the stars.
