Franck Balthazar’s 2022 Cornas Cuvée Juliette hails from steep, granitic terraces in the northern Rhône, capturing the power and finesse of Syrah on prime Cornas terroir. Sourced from head-trained vines and indigenous yeasts, it’s fermented in stainless steel before aging in seasoned barrels to preserve purity.

The result is a focused, medium-bodied Syrah with structured tannins, savory minerality, and village-level intensity. It exemplifies Balthazar’s evolving portfolio and respect for Cornas tradition.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Cornas Juliette was vinified without any sulfur additions up until bottling, where 1.5 grams per liter were added for protection. Black cherry compote, licorice, black plum, cedar and cured meat aromas frame its savory aromatic profile. Full-bodied, round and generous, the 2022 clocks out with persistent cadence on the nuanced finish." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

"Produced at a limited yield of eight hectoliters per hectare, the 2022 Cornas Juliette reveals a complex, dense bouquet of spices, dark cherries, flowers and licorice mingled with lovely notes of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it's compact and framed by an impressive chassis of structured tannins. Originating from a late-maturing (two weeks later than in Les Chaillots), south-facing plot at 370 meters above sea level on granite and clay soils, it delivers a long, powerful and slightly green finish. This robust and impressive wine will benefit from some time to mellow and fully express its potential." —Yohan Castaing

More about Franck Balthazar

As is so often the case when we want ready-to-drink and approachable wines that don’t break the bank, we look to a master who is famous for wines that are far more grand. In this case, the master is Franck Balthazar.

Balthazar seems to be on the cusp of joining the pantheon of great Northern Rhône traditionalists. He has thoroughbred holdings of great old vines planted on amazing sites which he works naturally. In the winery he employs old-school techniques and vinifies with little intervention (aka "natural"). The result of all his hard work are wines that express their terroir in the pure and profound way that only the “best ever” manage. It’s no surprise that the great Northern Rhône writer, Jonathan Livingstone-Learmonth, honored him with his "STGT" (soil to glass transfer) label, a label he uses for the few producers who manage to express their terroir purely and directly in their wines.
