Barbera from one of Barolo's most legendary addresses. Giacomo Conterno makes this from the same Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba that produces their famous Barolo, a 14-hectare amphitheater of clay and limestone the family bought in 1974. Roberto Conterno farms it immaculately and ages even the Barbera in large Slavonian oak casks, traditional-style, which gives the wine a depth and structure most Barbera never reaches. The 2017 is a warm, generous vintage. This drinks well now and has the stuffing to hold for several more years.

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.
