This is the heart of the legend: Giacomo Conterno's Barolo from Cascina Francia, the great Serralunga d'Alba vineyard the family bought in 1974, made in the ultra-traditional Conterno style with long maceration and years of aging in large oak casks. The 1994 is a deep back-vintage, now over three decades old and fully mature, from a difficult, cooler Piedmont year that demanded patience but rewards it in the glass with classic, savory Nebbiolo character. At this age it's all about secondary and tertiary complexity rather than fruit; decant carefully and drink soon. A rare opportunity to taste genuinely old Barolo from one of the world's most uncompromising estates.

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.
