The benchmark traditional Barolo from the benchmark traditional house, in a benchmark classical vintage. 1995 was a structured, properly cool year that rewarded the patient, and Giacomo Conterno's standard Cascina Francia from Roberto's father Giovanni's era spent its mandatory long stretch in 50hl Slavonian botti before release. Three decades on, this is fully mature Conterno — perfumed, savory, the famously firm Serralunga tannins long since folded into the fruit. The Conterno house is the most coveted label in Barolo collecting for reason, and 1995s are now squarely in their drinking window with no meaningful upside ahead. A drink-now museum piece from the cellar that defines the category.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Medium red. Superripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, redcurrant jam, strawberry, camphor and tartufi. Tightly wound and vibrant, with compelling density and clarity of red fruit flavor. Firm acidity and toothcoating tannins give this Barolo terrific structure and grip. Very long, vibrant aftertaste. Like the above two wines, this has fruit of steel." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

92 points

"A young and dense current Barolo release is the 1995 Barolo Cascina Francia. It possesses classic Nebbiolo traits of melted asphalt, cedar wood, sweet cherries, rose petals, and truffles. Full-bodied, deep, and chewy, with an intriguing earthy smokiness, this full-bodied, tannic, impressively concentrated and endowed Barolo can be drunk now, but will be even better with an additional 2-4 years of cellaring; it will last for 15+ years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo with polenta, tajarin al ragù di coniglio, or a roasted leg of lamb with rosemary. Aged Castelmagno or Bra duro to close. Conterno wants Piedmontese cooking, full stop.

Tasting Profile

Mature, perfumed, profoundly savory. Dried cherry, leather, truffle, tar, and sweet tobacco. The famously firm Serralunga tannins now velvet, the acid still bright. Long, layered, gently bitter — Barolo as it is meant to be.
