One of the very first Cascina Francia Riservas Giacomo Conterno ever released — the estate vineyard in Serralunga was only purchased in 1974, and Giovanni Conterno bottled the inaugural Cascina Francia in 1978. By 1980, this Riserva, the production was barely finding its stride. Forty-five years on, this is a working artifact from the most coveted traditional Barolo house in the world, made decades before Roberto Conterno took the reins. The 1980 vintage was modest, but Riserva selection in the hands of Giovanni meant the cream of the cream, aged interminably in 50hl Slavonian botti. Fully resolved, fully mature. A drink-tonight, not-tomorrow proposition for collectors who want to taste history.

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Treat it like a relic — agnolotti del plin in butter, or a simple roasted capon with Castelmagno. Skip anything heavily reduced or charred; the wine's delicacy needs a quiet plate to speak through.

Tasting Profile

Soft, ethereal, fully resolved. Dried cherry, leather, sweet tobacco, autumn leaf, and a savory truffled depth. Tannins gone, acidity holding the frame, finish quietly long. A whisper of a wine, not a shout.
