One of Barolo's great structured crus, from a quiet traditional master. Giacomo Fenocchio ages everything in large Slavonian casks and bottles each site separately to show its signature, and Villero, in the commune of Castiglione Falletto, is among the most respected: a cru known for power, depth, and serious aging potential. The 2013 was a glorious, structured classic vintage Flatiron singled out to reveal this estate's full potential. Now maturing, this is a wine of real substance that benefits from a generous decant and still has years ahead.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"The 2012 Barolo Villero is one of the more successful wines in the range. Red stone fruit, spice, leather and orange peel give the wine its attractive upper register. It would be nice to see a little more mid-palate depth and persistence." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"The Villero vineyard in Castiglione Falletto delivers darkness, power and length in this classic vintage. The 2013 Barolo Villero plays its best cards in the mouth, however. The nose is bold and dense due to aromas of dark fruit and mild spice. But the mouthfeel is more interesting, thanks to the fullness and the textural smoothness it displays. I would expect this wine to become more fine and linear with extra bottle aging." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

17 points

"Castiglione Falletto. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Leafy, cool cherry nose with hints of iron. Backward, youthful sweet fruit and wonderful grainy tannins. Great balance but not ready by far." —Walter Speller

Kerin O'Keefe

93 points

"New leather, woodland berry, dark spice and menthol aromas unfold in the glass. It’s bright and juicy, offering tight layers of raspberry compote, Morello cherry, cinnamon and clove alongside firm, chewy tannins. Fresh acidity lends balance while a graphite note energizes the finish. Give this time to unwind and develop even more complexity. Drink 2023–2038." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giacomo Fenocchio

Five generations of Fenocchios have been making wine from their Barolo holdings since 1894. Giacomo took over in 1964 and expanded the estate, then passed the torch to his son Claudio in 1989. They own four prized Cru plots—Bussia, Villero, Castellero, Cannubi—and make Barolo the traditional way: long maceration, no roto-fermentors, only indigenous methods that speak terroir.
