Giuseppe Mascarello is old-guard Piedmont, and a perfect demonstration of why their lesser-known grapes are worth seeking out. By the late 1950s Giuseppe was already famous, and when his old casks fell apart he bought giant new Slavonian oak ones; seventy years later, the estate (now run by his son Mauro) still ages everything in those same casks, Freisa included. That's the Mascarello signature: while other estates raise Freisa in steel for pure freshness, here it gets nearly a year in ancient wood, giving it more depth and grip. Freisa is a rare, slightly wild Piedmont grape related to Nebbiolo, and this one rewards the curious. This 2009 is a back-vintage now showing real maturity. Decant it and enjoy an old-school oddball done right.

Giuseppe Mascarello's origins trace to 1881 in Monforte d'Alba, now representing over 130 years of Barolo tradition. Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe avoid new French oak entirely, aging in decades-old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. These are classically-made Barolos—Monprivato is the crown jewel—that taste like the region's soul distilled into a bottle.
