The odd one out in Gunderloch's grand-cru lineup, and all the more interesting for it. Engelsberg sits high on the hill in Nackenheim, directly above the famous Rothenberg, but its soils are limestone rather than the iron-red slate that defines the Roter Hang below. That single geological swap changes everything: where the red-slate wines run savory and dark, this premier cru comes across firm, herbaceous, and almost umami-savory, dry to the bone and built for the table. Johannes Hasselbach farms it organically and ferments to total dryness, and the result is a serious, chalk-framed Riesling that plays a different game than its slate-grown siblings.

"The 2024 Riesling Engelsberg Nackenheim was harvested on the plateau that sits on top of the Red Slope. This is from various, diverse parcels where calcareous veins pervade the Permian sandstone. A touch of apricot is surrounded with smokiness on the nose. Gentle, bright freshness characterize the palate, which comes in with such brightness and an almost cool vibe. This speaks of ripe Amalfi lemons, pale plums and yellow apricots. The finish is beautifully zesty, long and really mouthwatering with a smooth, gentle, flow." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

"The 2024 Nackenheim Riesling Engelsberg 1G comes from the plateau above the Red Slope at the height of the Rothenberg cru where calcareous soils from the Upper Rotliegend meet the red clay slate from the Permian period. This gives an exciting, deep, pure and mineral bouquet of crushed stones, salt and ripe, bright fruit aromas. The wine is round, refined and savory, full of energy and salinity, fine grip and thrilling tension. It's expressive and with mouthwatering complexity. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in September 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach took over this Rheinhessen stalwart in 2016 and immediately started making them drier, more mineral, lower in alcohol. That's the move. The Rothenberg vineyard—which they own sixty-five percent of—produces some of Germany's finest Riesling: structured, age-worthy, full of yellow fruit and the kind of acidity that makes food sing.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
