Hipping is Gunderloch's smallest grand cru, carved from an extremely steep parcel of the Roter Hang, the five-kilometer stretch of blood-red, iron-rich slate that rises above the Rhine between Nackenheim and Nierstein. This is the floral one of the trio. The signature Roter Hang character is all here - herbal, stony, savory, sun-soaked - but Hipping adds an exotic lift of lilac and jasmine over the top. In the mouth it's firm and straight, locked in place by a tight grid of acidity, structured like sculpted stone. Johannes Hasselbach farms organically, ferments wild, and takes it to total dryness. A grand cru that shows the red slope's perfumed, high-tension side.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Riesling Niersteiner Hipping Grosses Gewächs still has a touch of reduction on the nose that relaxes into a subtle creaminess. Crunchy, juicy red apple and lemon aromas meet on the nose, while the palate is a triple triumph of juiciness, freshness and suppleness. This is beautifully smooth, fresh and zesty, with an exquisite saltiness. The 2024 is lovely and will last for a long time with all its energy, fill and joy." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

"Intensely yellow in color, the 2024 Nierstein Riesling Hipping GG is deep, clear and intense on the substantial, saline and beautifully generous yet refined and elegant nose that reveals a hint of pencil shaving notes. Round and lush yet highly refined and very elegant on the palate, this is a medium- to full-bodied, dense, almost rich and savory, mouthwatering, saline, crispy and grippy Riesling with a long and highly stimulating finish. It comes from about 45-year-old vines. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in September 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach took over this Rheinhessen stalwart in 2016 and immediately started making them drier, more mineral, lower in alcohol. That's the move. The Rothenberg vineyard—which they own sixty-five percent of—produces some of Germany's finest Riesling: structured, age-worthy, full of yellow fruit and the kind of acidity that makes food sing.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
