Rothenberg is the crown jewel - the Nackenheim near-monopole that Gunderloch has farmed since 1890 and where roughly two-thirds of the estate's vines still grow. Here the iron-rich, blood-red slate of the Roter Hang is at its most compressed and powerful, and Johannes Hasselbach farms organically and ferments wild to total dryness to let it speak as purely as possible. This is the grand cru that expresses the DNA of the red slope with the most depth, weight, and savory intensity. The 2024 is a baby, coiled tight with youthful energy and structured for the long haul - a powerful, spicy, mineral-soaked Riesling that will reward years in the cellar but already shows the class of the site. Decant it if you can't wait.

"The 2024 Riesling Nackenheimer Rothenberg Grosses Gewächs has the loveliest impression of flint on the nose. The palate is a wave of delicious juiciness that washes right over you, drenching you in red apple-tinged, luminous freshness, ripe tangerine and peppery herbs. This has impact, power, energy and animation. What a wonderfully dynamic wine. This has such articulation, fruit and wonderful spiciness. The finish is pure saltiness and pith. The 2024 is gorgeous." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

"Aged in stücks, the 2024 Nackenheim Riesling Rothenberg GG exhibits a lime green, very intense yellow color and opens with a deep, intense and concentrated as well as very complex nose of ripe and dense Riesling berries intertwined with notes of weathered, iron-rich slate, dashes of fresh lemon juice and salt. Full-bodied, round and juicy on the palate, it has a fine mineral structure and crystalline acidity that carries this beauty to a long, intense and mouthwatering finish. This is an elegant, concentrated and very complex Rothenberg of exceptional class and tension and with and uplifted and saline finish. It has great aging capacity. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in September 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach took over this Rheinhessen stalwart in 2016 and immediately started making them drier, more mineral, lower in alcohol. That's the move. The Rothenberg vineyard—which they own sixty-five percent of—produces some of Germany's finest Riesling: structured, age-worthy, full of yellow fruit and the kind of acidity that makes food sing.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
