2019 was the first vintage Henri Magnien made in its new winery, so this Champerrier marks the start of a new chapter for a Gevrey-Chambertin family that has been in the village since 1656. Charles Magnien, the twelfth generation, is also the first in the family to bottle the domaine's whole range rather than sell off fruit or wine. In other words, you're drinking a new generation's take on the family's vineyards. His approach is gentle: fairly cool fermentations, pump-overs rather than punch-downs, and vines from the family's own massal selections, hedged high and grown in cultivated soils. The Champerrier cuvée grows on crinoidal limestone and red clay, and that clay's colour comes from iron. The domaine's holdings reach up to grand cru Ruchottes and premiers crus like Cazetiers, which makes this bottling an easy, approachable way into the house style. It's elegant and light-bodied rather than heavy, the more graceful side of Gevrey.

"A notably ripe but agreeably fresh and earthy nose speaks of cassis, violet and plum that is trimmed in discreet but not invisible oak. There is outstanding richness to the impressively concentrated and generously proportion flavors that are shaped by a moderately firm tannic spine that belies just a hint of rusticity on the lingering finish where the only reproach is a nuance of warmth. This is a really good Gevrey villages." —Allen Meadows

"The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier mingles aromas of raspberries, cherries and plums with hints of loamy soil and espresso roast. Medium-bodied, pretty and precise, it has lively acids and melting tannins. Elegant and charming, but also endowed with sneaky depth at the core, this is another fine success from Magnien." —William Kelley

More about Henri Magnien

Few families can match the Magniens' roots in Gevrey-Chambertin. They have been there since 1656, and they even have their own strain of Pinot Noir. Pinot Magnien, a mutation the family identified in the 19th century, gives small, thick-skinned berries with concentrated juice. It still covers most of their vineyard area, and replacement vines come from massal selections of it.

Charles Magnien, the twelfth generation, took over from his father, François, more than a decade ago. He was the first in the family to bottle the whole range rather than sell off fruit or wine. The domaine is small, around six to seven hectares. At its heart are the grand cru Ruchottes-Chambertin and the premiers crus Lavaut Saint-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Champeaux, with some vines more than a century old. It has recently added a foothold in Corton and Aloxe-Corton. Charles has put his energy into the vineyards, farming largely organically.

In the cellar, the grapes get a cold soak, then ferment spontaneously in stainless steel. The share of whole clusters varies with the vintage. Barrels are chosen for the origin of their oak rather than for oak flavor. The wines are intense and aromatic, with a fine, supple texture: Gevrey's power without the heaviness.
